My hair had been looking a little rough lately, due to some self-inflicted damage that I had done. I recently lightened and colored my hair for the spring/summer and resulted in some damaged hair. But no worries! I was able to fix it overnight while I got some beauty rest! Keep reading to find out how. Now, before we get started. Before you attempt to do any form of hair coloring by yourself, especially if you have never done it before, GO TO A LICENSED HAIRSTYLIST! It’s definitely not as easy as it looks, and if you want it done right, see a professional. I am very hard headed and should practice what I preach more. I am such a cheapskate now since Frugal Fred, aka Nate, has rubbed off on me. lol. Also, I have tried to stick to a strict budget with the wedding and all going on now.

Here’s a brief history of my hair. I have been rocking my natural hair for over 6 years now. I started coloring my hair 3 years ago and change it up seasonally. I normally go a little lighter in the spring/summer months, a chocolate brown with caramel highlights/balayage. And then I dye it jet black for the fall/winter. Typically I go and have my hair lightened by a professional since it’s a more complex process to get the look I want without it looking splotchy and uneven, and dye it back black on my own. In efforts to save money and since we live so far from any hair salon, I figured I’d lighten it myself this year. Well, after a few tries and screw ups, I was able to get it to the color I wanted but also gave myself some frazzled ends. So I did a ton of research and found a super amazing product to help me out!

Phase One

I came across this brand called Olaplex on my search for ways to fix the frizzy mess that I had caused. It pretty much sounded like the holy grail of hair care for keeping your hair looking healthy when coloring and bleaching. They have a 3-step system. Olaplex No.1 and No.2 are for salon professionals only, and the Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3 is for at home use. First, you should know this is not a leave in conditioner, it needs to be washed out. However, I have read it works wonders if you let this soak in your hair overnight. So, after extensively researching the product and how it works and reading many reviews, I was sold on giving it a try! This past Friday night I dampened and towel dried my hair like instructed and applied generously to my hair, especially my ends. Then I headed to bed with high hopes for better hair!

Phase Two

Phase two is totally optional. I only did this step because my hair was in need of some deep conditioning anyways. In the morning, I got up and prepped a hair mask to deep condition my hair. I found this hair mask recipe a while ago on Pinterest and love how my hair feels after using it. Not to mention it smells amazing! Then I rinsed and shampooed the Olaplex out of my hair like it instructed me to and squeezed some of the water out of my hair to start applying my hair mask. Usually, I leave this one for a couple of hours, rinse, then apply my regular conditioner. So here’s how you make it:

  1. Blend half of an avocado (save the rest for lunch!), 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/4 cup of milk, and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil into a purée form. It should have a heavy conditioner texture
  2. Apply generously to hair
  3. Cover with a disposable shower cap to avoid the mess
  4. Let this sit on for a min of 30 to a couple of hours

In conclusion, the Olaplex has now permanently earned a spot in my hair care routine. I could feel a huge difference in the texture of my hair as soon as I rinsed it out! And for it to only be $28, it’s a steal for you to receive those kinds of results for that price! I do still need a trim since it has been a while since I’ve had one. But I can definitely kiss this damaged hair goodbye! Have you ever tried Olaplex out? Done any DIY hair masks lately? Share your experiences and tips with me below!
